To be honest, I am not real big on checking my Facebook. I probably only check it a few times a week. The only reason I got an account is because my wife thought it would be a good idea to keep up with family that we don't see everyday.
Anyways, I found an article on New York Times website talking about some of the recent changes to Facebook. They changed Facebook? According to this article, they did. The article didn't go into great details about the changes, but rather asks whether or not you like the changes. So I just logged on to my Facebook account to see what all they hype is about.
When I first logged in, I didn't really notice too many changes, just some more confusing stuff on the right hand side. I guess it doesn't bother me, before there was just a lot of white space on my computer over there. I guess that depends on your screen resolution. I was logged on for about 10 minutes checking out whats happening in peoples lives and responded to an email and noticed that the new ticker kept changing every time one of my friends did something. I guess I know how much certain friends are on Facebook.
Back to the article, it also referenced that Facebook made some more changes to their privacy settings. Which is always a good thing, I still don't feel really excited about sharing a whole of information of Facebook and don't really like sharing pictures and videos, because I don't know who will be accessing them. So any more secure settings is a good thing.
The last thing the article referred to was you can subscribe to someone's page that you aren't friends with. I can see why this might be a good thing. There are some of my friends that I am not really friends with but maybe would just like to keep tabs about what they have going on in their life. But at the same time, someone can subscribe to my page, even though we are not friends.
Sounds like their are a lot of people who do not like the new changes, what do you think of the changes? Am I missing something? I probably am, as I consider myself a Facebook beginner.
Dusty,
ReplyDeleteYou have summed up my thoughts completely. When I first began my Facebook page, I was constantly on and noticing any new items. Now I spend so much time, when I log on, getting caught up with friends and family that I didn't notice any big changes. I have logged onto other people's pages without being their friends, but I am concerned about privacy. I sometimes receive random messages from people I do not know. The people I have contacted, whom I am not friends with, are colleagues of mine. I know the students in school must be ok with the changes because one was on Facebook last night for over 4 hours. I am sure there will be more changes in the future.

I think you make some very interesting points. As one who has been on Facebook for quite some time I think it is only natural that everyone is reluctant to the changes. I think that every time an update comes out everyone complains. I think this is the first update that makes it legit to complain about the changes. I saw a funny picture that had a celebrity and it was commenting about the live feed and it said "Yo. I made a Facebook in the upper right corner so you could Facebook while your Facebookin" and I though that it was completely accurate. I flat out don't care nor do I wish to know what everyone is doing at every second of the day.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who uses something continuously is reluctant to change. If you are acquainted with your first car, you are reluctant to give it up. As is the case here. People who dislike the changes made to Facebook are those who use it for everything. They maintain their lives via a social network and when it changes, they sense a change in their own life. I know several of my friends greatly dislike the changes to Facebook for a multitude of reasons. Same say Facebook just changed, why change again. Some say they are simply trying to be something they’re not. Whatever Facebook's reason, the changes are not going to go away just because we complain. For me, I am a bit unhappy with what one of my friend's dubbed the "creeper feed" but if that is my only grievance with the company, then who am I to complain?
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
I have a question: an earlier post mentioned that a particular person was on Facebook for over 4 hours. Please help me out here because I am a Facebook beginner...AND a big multi-tasker. At any given time I have at least 5 windows open on my computer. Right now there are 8 windows including Ebay and Netflix. So if I had my Facebook page open, does this count for time? Even though I may be doing something completely different?
ReplyDeleteFacebook will change and continue to change regardless of what the population wants. They will please some people and disappoint others so there is no happy medium. Some people do not adapt well to change and this bothers them when Facebook comes up with new stuff. I personally don’t mind it. I like that Facebook continues to try new things and improve their website. If you don’t adapt, you die out eventually I believe so Facebook is taking the right approach. Interesting article!
